Vilnis Titāns

Gallery "Daugava" published a book about sculptor Vilnis Titāns (1944–2006) Publication financially supported by entrepreneur Guntis Rāvis. “Vilnis Titāns (1944–2006) was one of the great masters of Latvian sculpture. This publication covers the sculptor’s creative work and life philosophy, sketching his personality through the memories of those who knew him, within the context of the past era and the present.” “The sculptor Vilnis Titāns (1944–2006) liked geography maps; he would connect various points on them with straight lines, mark the centres at the intersections of those lines, and record their longitude and latitude degrees. This is how his ‘bridges’ emerged, linking Kolka, Roņu Island, and Ainaži. Maps stimulated his creative thinking, but it was Latvia that inspired the sculptor. If one were to mark the places where Vilnis Titāns’s signs, monuments, and objects are installed on a map of Latvia with red dots, the map would resemble a cluster of rowan berries in autumn. The granite‑carved “Sun signs” the sculptor installed at Latvia’s most distant eastern, western, northern, and southern points because he wished Latvia to be a country whose borders are marked by works of art, not barbed‑wire fences. He saw Latvia in the sign of the Sun and wished it a sun‑lit lifetime… ” Vilnis Titāns / [artist Juris Petraškevičs; translator Maija Oginta]
